Be Crafty to Help Orphans! (Oct. 30 deadline)

We invite you to help Nightlight by doing something you love… crafting!  Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores is hosting a sweepstakes called Craft for a Cause.  The intent is to encourage Jo-Ann customers to make and donate a handmade item directly to their favorite charity.

You must be 14 or older to enter. Each person enters their craft on behalf of Nightlight. You are then eligible yourself to win one of five $1,500.00 gift cards from Jo-Ann. The three non-profits who receive the most craft items submitted on their behalf are then eligible to receive a portion of a $90,000.00 donation from Jo-Ann and it’s partner organizations!

So, how does it work?

  • Register at Craft for a Cause
  • You must submit your entry by October 30, 2010
  • You must be 14 or older to participate. This could be a great mom-daughter-granddaughter-girl scout troop-youth group project.
  • When you register you are asked to provide the name of the non-profit for which you are making the craft. Nightlight may not appear in the drop-down menu provided, but you may still enter it as an option.
  • Please review the sweepstakes rules.
  • You must buy the majority of the supplies for your project from Jo-Ann and provide a scanned copy of your sales receipt as a part of your registration/submission. Continue reading »

“Like Dandelion Dust”: A Film of Pain and Courage

(This post is by Ron Stoddart, Executive Director of Nightlight Christian Adoptions.)

I had an opportunity to preview a new movie about adoption. “Like Dandelion Dust,” with Mira Sorvino, is a movie best described with two words – pain and courage. Although the premise of the movie may cause unnecessary concern for adopting parents as it is based on a very unusual set of circumstances, it nevertheless portrays the pain, courage and love involved in every adoption in a balanced and powerful way. For those who cannot understand how a biological parent could ever place a child for adoption, the emotions and decision-making is explored with realism and compassion. For those who cannot understand how parents could ever love an adopted child as much as a biological child, there is no room left to wonder. I suppose it says a lot when a movie is over and you find yourself able to empathize or identify with each of the main characters. A very good movie – but take a box of tissues with you.

Like Dandelion Dust” begins a nationwide release on September 24, 2010.

Online Auction to Support Orphans (we need your help!)

November is Adoption Awareness Month! Nightlight wants more people to be able to help the orphans worldwide who long for a family of their own . . . especially the children who have a harder time getting a family: they may be over 10, or maybe they just need some surgery so that they can live a full, rich life. And they would LOVE to have a family of their own.

Can you help us? Beginning November 1, 2010, Nightlight will be holding its first online auction to raise much needed funds to help orphans worldwide. Scholarships will be provided by Nightlight to families who want to adopt an older child or a child with a special need.

But we need your support!

How You Can Help:

Donate
We need Auction items to add to our auction. Can you donate a vacation getaway, offer an interesting experience (like a flight over the countryside or an afternoon of sailing), a business or personal service, tickets to sporting or entertainment events, or anything else that sounds fun to bid on? This is the month before Christmas so we hope we’ll have lots of bidders doing some Christmas shopping to benefit orphans. But we need to hear from you right away. Please click here to Donate.

Be a Sponsor
Contact us by email (kathryn@nightlight.org) or give us a call at (714) 693-5437 to take advantage of promotional opportunities for your business or to pledge your individual support. We’ll be happy add your company’s logo and link to your web site to draw more people to your business.

Tell Your Friends
Do you know someone who would be interested in supporting our cause? Please share the news of the online auction with your friends so they can be part of the excitement. Refer a Friend to our auction so they can get involved.

If you have any questions, please give us a call at (714) 693-5437.

Thank you in advance for your continued support! We look forward to your item donation and online bids!

Uganda Video

Nightlight Christian Adoptions has put together a video with photos from our last mission trip to Uganda. It tells a great story about the people of Uganda and is very compelling. Please feel free to use this video in your church and community events to raise support for Tender Hearts Babies Home.

Uganda Mission Team: A few more openings available

As you know for the past few months, Nightlight has been in the planning stages of preparing a team to go to Uganda this coming October. Unfortunately, a few of our team members have had unexpected conflict and are now unable to travel. Because of these events we are extending one more opportunity for you to join if you feel led to do so. If God is calling you to Kampala and you have not yet responded please do. We are praying that hearts and minds will be opened and that God will accomplish His work through us over the next months and years to come.

The dates of our trip are October 22-31st. The cost is approximately $2500. If you are interested in going on this trip please email Lisa ASAP. Plans are progressing very quickly as the time for our departure grows near!

Back to school with your adopted child

As your adopted children head to school — whether for the first time or not — you may wonder how to talk to your children’s teachers about adoption and adoption-related challenges your children face. Heartofthematterseminars.com has prepared a wonderful document to help you think through how to help both your children and their teachers. Download it here: Talking with Teachers (pdf).

Ugandan Children Visit Southern California

The following post is by Kathryn Deiters from Nightlight’s CA office, which served in an advisory role to Calvary Community Church, which organized this Uganda tour.

Ten beautiful children from Uganda just left America after 2 weeks of summer fun with families in Southern California. Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village brought the children over for a very special time with their host families — going to the beach, water park, attending Vacation Bible School, going to church with their host families, and enjoying that special feeling of living with a family that loves them.

On Sunday, July 25th, they put on a performance at Calvary, dancing and singing, dressed in their colorful African costumes. (See YouTube videos below.) Some of the children gave their testimonies, sharing how God has brought them through very difficult losses in their short little lives. But despite the losses they’ve experienced, they know the love of their heavenly Father. He is the one who has seen them through their struggles and gives them a joy they we in bountiful America too often lack.

Uganda Praise: Baby’s Home Rent

Last week I sent out an urgent message that the rent at the Tender Hearts Baby’s Home was due at the end of the month. We must pay 6 months of rent each time and the total due was $4,200. As of Friday of last week, we had raised $4,065! I was overwhelmed by your response and by God’s faithfulness when I totaled the numbers on Friday. I think often, in crisis, we doubt that God is big enough. It is with each demonstration of His faithfulness that our faith grows. Through your generosity and willingness to be guided by the Lord, He has continued to show us his faithfulness and also that it is His will for us to be working in Uganda. Thank you to everyone who gave. Please share this story of God’s provision with everyone. He deserves all the glory.

In addition, we now have 18 team members signed up to go to Uganda in October for our first Nightlight mission trip. I have been so touched by the testimony of those who have joined our team. Thank you to everyone who continues to support the baby’s home in finances and in prayer. Please keep our mission team in your prayers as we raise funds, prepare to travel, and while we are in country. We will provide more updates as we go along.

God Bless,
Lisa Prather, LMSW
Assistant Director
