“Like Dandelion Dust”: A Film of Pain and Courage

(This post is by Ron Stoddart, Executive Director of Nightlight Christian Adoptions.)

I had an opportunity to preview a new movie about adoption. “Like Dandelion Dust,” with Mira Sorvino, is a movie best described with two words – pain and courage. Although the premise of the movie may cause unnecessary concern for adopting parents as it is based on a very unusual set of circumstances, it nevertheless portrays the pain, courage and love involved in every adoption in a balanced and powerful way. For those who cannot understand how a biological parent could ever place a child for adoption, the emotions and decision-making is explored with realism and compassion. For those who cannot understand how parents could ever love an adopted child as much as a biological child, there is no room left to wonder. I suppose it says a lot when a movie is over and you find yourself able to empathize or identify with each of the main characters. A very good movie – but take a box of tissues with you.

Like Dandelion Dust” begins a nationwide release on September 24, 2010.

Online Auction to Support Orphans (we need your help!)

November is Adoption Awareness Month! Nightlight wants more people to be able to help the orphans worldwide who long for a family of their own . . . especially the children who have a harder time getting a family: they may be over 10, or maybe they just need some surgery so that they can live a full, rich life. And they would LOVE to have a family of their own.

Can you help us? Beginning November 1, 2010, Nightlight will be holding its first online auction to raise much needed funds to help orphans worldwide. Scholarships will be provided by Nightlight to families who want to adopt an older child or a child with a special need.

But we need your support!

How You Can Help:

Donate
We need Auction items to add to our auction. Can you donate a vacation getaway, offer an interesting experience (like a flight over the countryside or an afternoon of sailing), a business or personal service, tickets to sporting or entertainment events, or anything else that sounds fun to bid on? This is the month before Christmas so we hope we’ll have lots of bidders doing some Christmas shopping to benefit orphans. But we need to hear from you right away. Please click here to Donate.

Be a Sponsor
Contact us by email (kathryn@nightlight.org) or give us a call at (714) 693-5437 to take advantage of promotional opportunities for your business or to pledge your individual support. We’ll be happy add your company’s logo and link to your web site to draw more people to your business.

Tell Your Friends
Do you know someone who would be interested in supporting our cause? Please share the news of the online auction with your friends so they can be part of the excitement. Refer a Friend to our auction so they can get involved.

If you have any questions, please give us a call at (714) 693-5437.

Thank you in advance for your continued support! We look forward to your item donation and online bids!

Chase Community Giving

chase-hand

We would like to thank all of you who voted for Nightlight in the Chase Community Giving Campaign. The votes have been counted, and Nightlight did not finish in the top 100. This was the first time we had ever done something like this and it was certainly a learning experience. We now have lots of Facebook friends of Nightlight — people who wouldn’t have known about Nightlight otherwise have now been able to learn about us. So in this regard we are definitely winners. We do appreciate all of your support this year and we’ll see what we can do next year to broaden our reach.

700 votes and counting

chase-handThis morning, Nightlight passed the 700 votes mark in the Chase Community Giving Campaign that I blogged about 2 days ago. This is great news! We’d love to push past 1000 votes this weekend and keep the momentum going. Here’s what you can do:

  • Vote
  • Publicize this on your Facebook page
  • Do a blog post linking to www.nightlight.org (instructions are there, too)

Remember, the top 100 charities in the voting receive $25,000. We don’t know where we stand compared to other charities, so we’ll keep pushing till the first-round voting ends on Dec. 11. Please help us!
