Guatemala adoptions on hold

On December 31, 2007, the Hague went into effect in Guatemala, and all new Guatemalan adoptions are on hold until new policies and procedures are implemented by the Guatemalan government. As soon as possible we will provide an update about the status of adoptions from Guatemala.

Sponsor a Waiting Child

The following waiting children are in foster care in Guatemala. Although they are not available for adoption, we are seeking a few families willing to financially sponsor them during the hold on Guatemala adoptions. If you would like more information, please contact Carolina Hope. (Note that sponsoring a child now will not affect who will ultimately adopt the child.)

Policies for Adoption of Waiting Children

Before you request the referral of one of these children, we ask that you are at least close to receiving adoption pre-approval (I-171H or I-797C) from Citizenship and Immigration Services. If you are CIS pre-approved and a child is assigned to you, the child will be placed on hold for seven days. Before a child is considered fully assigned to you, you must sign a commitment letter as well as pay established facilitator and agency fees. If the commitment letter is not received by fax within seven days and funds are not received by the office within 10 days, then the child can be assigned to another family unless special arrangements are made. These children cannot be held for families who will take months to complete all the paperwork; it is not fair to the children or to you, the prospective adoptive parent.

Carolina Hope Christian Adoption Agency cannot guarantee that a particular child can be matched with a family. More than one agency may be advocating for a child, and more than one family may be interested in a child. If more than one family should express interest in the same child, Carolina Hope will advise all interested families as soon as an assignment decision has been made. We hope that you will understand the urgency of placing every child with a family and that you will remain open to the many other children in need of homes - whether or not they are photolisted.

Having several families who are interested in a specific child provides a child with an increased opportunity to be adopted. However, one family must ultimately commit to the child. Therefore, we ask that you make a decision within a reasonable timeframe. Having a child’s picture evaluated by a physician who specializes in international adoptions is highly recommended, and we understand that until you get the results back from a clinic, you cannot give the agency a definitive answer. Certainly, making this life-long decision involves serious consideration.
